Caterpillar’s marketing and communications team  approached Red O with a large project and some ideas. They needed a new portal for their 100k users. They’d outgrown their current portal and decided it was time. They had the ideas of what they wanted but did not have the expertise that Red O has when it comes to putting it all together. We are so proud to say we nailed the project and will be forever grateful for the faith and opportunity that Caterpillar afforded to our humble design company.

It goes without saying we have not had a client or a project as large and global as Caterpillar. With over 100,000 employees in 105 countries around the world, this was a monumental task and honor to be chosen by such an elite company to design and create their employee portal for them.  They had already decided on the Modern SharePoint platform so it was up to us to deliver a product worthy of such a brand. We hit it out of the park. Their new portal saw double the normal traffic – immediately. We added so many new communication features like Yammers (blogs), team sites, integrated Teams apps, integrated Outlook functionality and 13 new Power Apps to automate so many of the processes they needed to monitor around the world.

Outgrowing The Old

Even companies like Caterpillar could use site design experts outside of their own 4 walls. They had outgrown their old SharePoint portal by leaps and bounds. It was 10 years old and its age and lack of functionality was showing. We were honored to be invited to help them develop the overall plan and flush out all the design and layout options with them for something as crucial as their internal employee portal. Caterpillar had their own ideas, we had the skillset and together we made it happen. This was a huge undertaking involving over 20 people sharing ideas. In 90 days, we delivered the finished product of over 240 ‘team pages’ and 1000s of documents, videos, manuals, tech papers and dozens of new Power Apps.

New Communication Options

Caterpillar has over 100,000 employees that constantly need to communicate with each other around the world at all hours and in all time zones. They needed ways for their teams to meet online at the drop of a hat and solve problems PDQ. We worked with them to set up dozens of team sites (essentially microsites) for over 75 separate groups in this organization, We added Teas integration, Outlook group integrations and a few other features to enhance communications and give Caterpillar more robust options (read as multimedia) to use while meeting across the globe. Modern Sharepoint has the capability to deliver what Caterpillar needed and we had the expertise to make their dreams and wishes a reality.

New Is Usually Better

Caterpillar’s dated, clunky and lackluster portal served them well for almost a decade. But a decade in digital terms may as well be eons in Earth terms. So much has changed and so much more functionality was needed for this huge company. The new portal was built, signed sealed and delivered in just 3 months and was an instant success. Page views were up, new accounts were up, requests for ‘more of everything’ were coming in. We stayed on for a two weeks after delivery of the product to make sure everyone was happy with the product and we are proud to say we had zero complaints about the portal… which is saying something because they were over 100k users.  Â
